While browsing through our Baja book
one day,
Rob Stark came across a section which referred to a place southwest of
Mexicali, off of Highway 2. This place had hot springs, and cold pools.
It is called, "Canon de Guadalupe". Our first visit there was in summer
of 1991. Although the weather was incredibly hot then, we had a very
good
time. The cold pools at the bottom of the canyon were simply terrific,
and we hiked to a waterfall located about a mile or so upstream. The
hot
springs are actually man-made tubs of concrete which the proprietor had
set up for his visitors. He pumped in the water from the hot spring
pools
which were located underground.
Canon de Guadalupe has developed quickly
since
our first trip there in 1991. Now, there are actually 3 separate
camping
areas, and the prices have increased to around $20-$30 per person (from
$7 our first
trip). Also, the canyon is not the place it once was, not as
clean, and there's not the sense of adventure that you had
before. I doubt I'll ever return to this one-time oasis in the
desert.
