A Baja Weekend - Page 1

Robert and I had 3 1/2 days to drive wherever we wanted to in Baja.  After mulling over our options, we decided to drive through San Felipe, south to Gonzaga Bay, and then over to Highway 1 and back through Cataviña.  Our last few driving trips had always had a rushed feel to them, so despite all the miles we would log on this excursion, we were intent on making this trip a "relaxed" vacation.

We left Thursday, January 25, 2001, at 11:00 am, and crossed the border in Tecate, not wanting to deal with neither Tijuana nor Mexicali traffic.  After optaining our tourist cards and paying the fee at the border bank (190 pesos or $21 US), we drove non-stop until Cantu Grade, where Rob clicked a picture of the valley below us.  Then, it was again non-stop driving until we reached San Felipe.  Starving, we stopped at a restaurant along the malecon for some fish tacos.  They were delicious as always.
It was 7 pm before we left San Felipe, and although our destination was still some 2 1/2 hours away, we were in no hurry, as we both were determined not to rush on this trip.  We reached our nighttime stop, an abandoned house some 16 miles south of Puertecitos, at close to 9:30 pm.  We set up the tent, unpacked our chairs, and stargazed for an hour or so before turning in for the night.  It was a very cold night, but being in Baja seemed to take the chill away.
