A New Mission & A Mystery Solved - Page 1

Having a couple of extra vacation days, and a friend who has time off, Rob and I decided to take a trip south .  Our agenda was fairly simple.  We really wanted to find Molina Lacey (see details from my last trip, HERE), and we also wanted to visit the mission site at Calamajue.

We left on Friday, March 15.  After a couple of quick stops to buy some essentials, we headed to the crossing at Tecate, which we find to be much easier than the Tijuana or Mexicali border crossings.
On the way to Mexicali, we stopped off at La Rumerosa to take some pictures.  We also stopped at the site for the Cimarrón cache, hidden by Bajaexplorer, Carlos F., and Roberto B. .  After an hour and a half of driving and hiking, we gave up the search.  We didn't have the information from the cache, so we were basically searching with just the GPS as a guide.  It turns out, that this cache is hidden on a hill that we were searching around.  No wonder we couldn't find it!  We didn't bother looking up!
After driving quickly through Mexicali, we headed down towards San Felipe.  Along the way, we stopped at the dry lake bed (Laguna Salada) for more pictures.
Once in San Felipe, it was off to our favorite local taco stand, for fish tacos.  After dinner, we headed towards Puertecitos.  Now that it was dark, we decided to look out for Comet Ikeya-Zhang, that we knew was out, near the setting moon.  After spotting the comet with our naked eye, we set up Rob's telescope to get a better view.  What a site!  It was very, very impressive.
Onward to Puertecitos, and eventually the house, where we set up camp.  It was a chilly night, so we only stayed up for an hour or so stargazing.  We saw many shooting stars, and had a good time admiring the heavens, before heading off to the warmth of our sleeping bags and tent at about 10 pm.
