Mission San Borja

One of the most beautiful missions in all of Baja is Mission San Borja.  Located south of the road to Bahia de Los Angeles, and east of Highway 1, the two separate roads leading to this extremely remote mission are bad by any standard.  When we traveled the route in 1993, we experienced washouts, narrow roads, and several other more minor obstacles.  However, the mission itself quickly became one of my favorites in all of Baja.
Sitting in a valley, literally in the middle of nowhere, Mission San Borja is very well kept up for being in such a remote region.  There is a small farm at the mission, where a local family looks after and keeps up the mission.  The church is still in use, although I believe there is just the one family in the entire region.  The inside of the church appears unchanged since it was finished in 1801, with high adobe ceilings and stone walls.  An extremely impressive architectural achievement indeed.
If you are careful, you can reach the mission in about 2 1/2 hours from the Bahia de Los Angeles route.  When we traveled to the mission in 1993, the road from Highway 1 was in terrible condition, and it took us almost 4 hours to get to the pavement.  If you have the time, and a sturdy high-clearance vehicle (4WD preferred), then this trip is a worthwhile adventure.  Don't even attempt to make the drive in a standard passenger car or 2WD vehicle.  You probably won't get too far.
